Forchtenstein

Forchtenstein is a village in the district “Mattersburg” in the county “Burgenland”. The woody and hilly scenery is perfect  to hike and bike. In hot summers you can visit the cool “Badestausee” which is ideal for swimming.

In Forchtenstein you can find lots of trees like the pine, the spruce, and the chestnut. Forchtenstein has the perfect climate for the chestnut.

Fine – chestnut

The fine – chestnut , also called eat – chestnut , is the only European representative oft he chestnut . It´s a tree which can get 35 m high . It´s used for example for “Maroni” . They are sweet and easy to peel.

The Mountain Rosalia

The Mountain Rosalia is a foothill of the Alps. It consists of “Gneis”, “Glimmerschiefer” and “Kalkstein”. The highest mountain is called “Heuberg“ and is 748 m high. In the east end lies the castle Forchtenstein. Through the mountain flows the river “Wulka”. The mountain Rosalia can only be crossed on a street from Mattersburg to Hochwolkersdorf.

The castle Forchtenstein

The castle Forchtenstein was built between 1400 and 1450 and lies between Lower Austria and Burgenland. The castle is  one of the symbols of Burgenland. In the wars against the Turks the castle was the “Fortress of the Western World”. Since the early seventeenth century it has belonged to the family Esterhazy. The castle contains the family’s art collection.

The bathing reservoir

The bathing reservoir in Forchtenstein is a small lake for the people who live in and around Forchtenstein. The people in Forchtenstein call  it “Paradise“ because it is so beautiful. The bathing reservoir in Forchtenstein was built from 1967 to 1968. The lake is 150 metres wide, 170 metres long. There is a playground, a tennis court, a 4 metre long slide, and a campsite for people who want to relax or spend their holidays in nature.
